Welcome to UPMC Hamot!
There is no career that is more exciting, challenging and gratifying than a career in medicine. At UPMC Hamot, we provide our residents and fellow with the training and experience required to create competent, compassionate physicians and surgeons who are committed to ensuring patient safety and quality of care in everything they do.
UPMC Hamot was founded in 1881 and has a long tradition of medical education, dating back to the early 1900s. We currently offer emergency medicine, neurology and orthopaedic surgery residency programs and a hand fellowship, as well as a PharmD pharmacy residency. Additionally, UPMC Hamot is a major participating training site for visiting colon-rectal fellows and ENT, ophthalmology and podiatry residents.
The programs are progressive, individualized and are precepted by experienced and dedicated practitioners who are experts in their fields. Each program is designed to ensure competence, build confidence and foster independence.
UPMC Hamot’s residents and fellow also benefit from the Medical Center’s state-of-the-art facilities and resources. UPMC Hamot regularly invests in new technology—providing the community with access to high quality care right here in Erie and giving UPMC Hamot residents opportunities to train with advanced technology. Examples of recent technological investments include a 64-slice CT scanner which was installed in 2007 and the Interventional Suite and Biplane Unit which opened in 2008 to enhance UPMC Hamot's capabilities for minimally invasive procedures. As a Level II trauma center and the only provider of trauma services in the region, our residents also have access to more high acuity cases in their area of specialization.
UPMC Hamot's commitment to providing superior patient care and focus on patient safety and quality initiatives has repeatedly gained national attention. Most recently, the Leapfrog Group, an organization that measures national hospitals’ quality and safety, named UPMC Hamot one of 42 Leapfrog Top Hospitals in 2007. UPMC Hamot also became the first healthcare provider in the region to receive the Joint Commission’s Certification of Distinction for Primary Stroke Centers in 2007. The Medical Center is well-respected and trusted by the community and consistently receives the National Research Corporation's Consumer Choice Award. UPMC Hamot has been repeatedly recognized as a Top 50 Hospital by US News and World Report, as well as a 100 Top Hospital by Thomson (formally known as Solucient), and one of the 100 Best Places to Work in PA. These recognitions are a testament to the quality of care we strive for at UPMC Hamot everyday and we invite you to become a part of it during your residency or fellowship training.
